David Bowie

Professor of Linguistics & English
University of Alaska Anchorage

I am a member of the faculty of the Department of English at the University of Alaska Anchorage, and I am currently serving as Chair of the department My research, broadly stated, focuses on how individuals express their identities in coherent ways that others understand with little or no overt direction and what principles govern those actions; my research within this focuses primarily on identities of aging (and I’ve dabbled a little in expressions of religious identity, as well), and to understand how people do these things, I look at linguistic variation. I’ve also done some work on the development of regional varieties of English, with most of my work in that realm focused on Utah (plus a bit in Alaska). I’ve set up this site to give others access to information on my professional activities; you can use the links on the left side of the page or below to get to the various parts of the site. I’ve included a short summary of each page below to help you decide what link to follow.
